Leaders from around the world have gathered at UN headquarters in New York to discuss ways to ensure quality education for all. Speaking to them, UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed said that raising the level of education of the population will undoubtedly lead to an increase in the welfare of states.
“Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all” is the fourth of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
Amina Mohammed recalled that in order to achieve this Goal, the international community must work simultaneously in four areas: allocate the necessary financial resources; share innovations; to improve the educational level of girls; and to promote access to education in humanitarian crises.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General recalled the importance of youth education, noting that by equipping girls and boys with knowledge and skills, states are investing in a peaceful and prosperous future for all sectors of society.
In recent years, the world has made significant progress in the field of education, but many problems have not yet been resolved.
Thus, millions of children around the world are still deprived of the opportunity to learn. UN experts fear that if current trends continue and without major reform in education, the goal of universal enrollment in completed primary education will be achieved only by 2042, and complete secondary education – not earlier than 50 years from now.
According to UNESCO, the current level of funding remains clearly insufficient to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4. According to experts, “this assistance should be increased at least sixfold and provided to the countries most in need.”
